What can a student expect while living in Cambridge?

When you decide to study in the UK, choosing the right accommodation can be a challenging decision for any international student. It is one of those things that can make or break your experience. It feels like stepping into the unknown, landing in a new country with a different culture and language, so our first piece of advice is to embrace the differences, become more open-minded and make the most of a new world full of opportunity!

So how can you be comfortable with choosing UK accommodation?

At Cambridge Seminars College, we commit to supporting students from the very beginning, to make they fully enjoy their experience and can fulfil their potential. If you choose to stay with a home-stay host, we can guarantee that you will be in a friendly, clean, and safe environment. Our amazing home-stay hosts are carefully chosen so they will give you a warm welcome, helping and supporting you throughout your stay.

What is it like living in a host family?

The first week of living with a host family is about observing, listening and adapting to a new lifestyle, to become a part of the family, exchanging traditions, joining family events, having informal chats and insightful conversations that will support learning. I would say that a home-stay host is the right option for you if you are hoping to perfect your English in everyday situations, you prefer a cosy family environment (being able to adjust to another family’s way of life) and you are open to trying local food and learning other routines – soaking up British culture! This option is also the most affordable, as you will have laundry facilities included and proper meals ready each morning and evening, which will give you more time to study and explore Cambridge.

Living with a home-stay host might not be for everyone, but, it is a unique and rich cultural experience, so I would encourage you to challenge yourself and try it!

Here are some comments written by both current students, and hosts, at Cambridge Seminars College:

“During my many years as a host family I have been very impressed with the students from Cambridge Seminars that have stayed with me.  Firstly, to have come from another country at a young age to study in Cambridge is very brave of them.  Then to act in a very respectful manner beyond their years towards myself and my family is commendable to say the least. I look forward to hosting more students”

Liz & family (Home-stay Host), Cambridge UK

“I had a very warm welcome when I first moved in, it took me around a week or two to fully settle in – we sit in the living room most of the day and just chill – they are very responsive to each and every situation e.g. if I’m studying they will keep the noise down without me having to tell them – they make really good food and a wide variety of dishes – they are all very friendly and helpful and would offer to help me out whenever and wherever I am. Overall I am very happy with my host family and can’t really ask for anything more”

Khaled (A-level student), Kuwait

“Being a host family is lovely. Not only do you welcome a new person into your home but you also get to learn a new culture and language. Myself and my family all love hosting. We like to view anyone who stays with us as family and include them in as much as we can”

Antoinette & family (Home-stay Host), Cambridge UK

“Being in a host family is quite different from what I am used to, it’s a great way to really get to know another culture and how other families around the world function. I really like the English houses too. It’s different from what I grew up in but that’s great”

Efren (A-level student), Mexico

“Living with a host family has so many nice things including language improvement and getting to know other cultures. Another good thing is that you don’t have to do any cleaning or cooking, it’s all going to be done by the host family, so you will have more free time. Living with a host family makes you more organised.”

Wesam (A-level student), Libya
